It's important to floss sooner rather than later, so it's better to do it at night. If you're too tired before bed, try to floss after dinner or a few hours before you go to sleep so you're not too tired to do it properly. Flossing once a day is enough, unless you get something, such as corn on the cob, stuck between your teeth.

If you miss a day you'll be fine, but don't skip a week! Dental plaque, which is the soft stuff you remove when you floss, turns into hard stuff called calculus when left behind. When left too long, that gunk sticks to your teeth like cement and has to be removed by the dentist or hygienist at your next dental appointment.

It's best to floss before you brush, so you can sweep away any loose plaque the floss has detached from your teeth. Always use dental floss for the job; dental sticks or toothpicks are too big and can cause irreversible damage to your gums. In addition, be sure to floss in front of a mirror so you can see what you're doing and avoid hurting your gums. I recommend waxed dental floss, since it slides easily between teeth. You can also try flavored floss (like mint or cinnamon) if you think the taste might motivate you to floss more often.
